Fly Fishing the Roaring Fork Valley
Most of my clients are in the valley because they are visiting Aspen on family trips. Don’t overlook Aspen when considering your next destination fly fishing trip. From Aspen we can be on the water in a world class fishing spot after a quick 15-30 minute drive. The Roaring Fork River is the closest river to Aspen and offers world class fishing year round. During runoff we might opt to go fish the Frying Pan if the Fork is too high and dirty. If its a nice warm winter day and the the snow isn’t great for skiing, I highly recommend wade fishing the Roaring Fork. The Frying Pan River is also great year round. The Frying Pan River is about a 25 minute drive from Aspen and is a world famous tail water river known for its dry fly fishing and green drake hatches that attract anglers from all over the country.
As we move further down the valley towards Carbondale, more creeks pump up the volume of the Roaring Fork and it is all about float fishing from raft or drift boat. Down here the river is bigger and so are the fish. Carbondale is about a 45-50 minute drive from Aspen. About 15 river miles from Carbondale the Roaring Fork meets the Colorado River at Glenwood Springs. The Colorado River is a good hour drive from Aspen and several thousand feet lower, so it can get hot down there in July and August. Some of the places we fish on the Colorado River are about an hour and 20 minute drive from Aspen. The river stays cold enough to hold trout until the town of Rifle. There are trout down river from Rifle, but we usually don’t fish that far down river. In the winter, when its freezing up on the mountain, it can be nice fishing weather (40-60F), down on the Colorado River.
Float trips are recommended for anglers with a little bit of experience, but I have taken first timers before and had successful days. Half day wade trips are our most popular product because we can pick you up in Aspen, have you fishing quickly and then have you back in Aspen in about 4 hours. This Valley offers great fishing opportunities that are manageable for first timers, yet still very impressive to expert anglers.
